Milton, Vermont – A devastating workplace accident at Surface Creations of Vermont, a family-owned custom countertop business in Milton, has left a 28-year-old man dead after being crushed by a massive stone slab. Emergency services were called to the scene on Wednesday, where they found the worker from Swanton in critical condition.

According to the Milton Police Department, the stone slab, believed to have weighed upwards of 2,000 pounds, swung in the wrong direction while being moved, subsequently crushing the worker. The man was breathing when emergency crews arrived and transported him to the University of Vermont Medical Center. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries the following day.

The Vermont Occupational Safety and Health Administration (VOSHA) is conducting a full investigation into the incident. In a statement to WCAX News, Department of Labor director Dirk Anderson expressed his condolences: “Our thoughts are with the employee’s family and his coworkers, as VOSHA conducts a full investigation of the incident.”

Milton Police Lt. Frank Scalise confirmed that their initial investigation showed no sign of criminal wrongdoing. “We see no signs of criminal violations stemming from that. A really unfortunate incident, and we wish the best for him and his family,” said Scalise.

As the community mourns the loss of a young worker, authorities continue to investigate the tragic accident. Surface Creations of Vermont, known for its family-oriented approach to business, now faces the challenge of coping with the loss of one of their own.
